Welcom to exground filmfest 24!

The viewing committee has spent the last months almost completely in the dark, compiling an ambitious and varied program for the Wiesbaden audience and the trade professionals from near and far. Around 250 highlights from the current offering of independently produced short and feature films can be seen in the state capital in November – selected from more than 2,500 film submissions from 151 countries from Andorra to Cyprus. The international importance of the festival is proven by the fact that in comparison with last year, 25% more films from all over the world have been submitted.

In addition to the established programs American Independents, News from Asia, Neues aus Deutschland, International, as well as the international short and feature films, the country focus in 2011 lies on Israel. The program presents current feature films and documentaries as well as several programs with short films by up-and-coming directorial talents from selected Israeli film academies. On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, a tribute program is dedicated to the Sam Spiegel Film & Television School – Jerusalem. In the course of the country focus, exground filmfest shows a retrospective of Israeli filmmaker Eyal Sivan’s work, who is also known as a harsh critic of Israel’s politics. Among his bestknown films are THE SPECIALIST, a documentary on the Eichmann trial, and JAFFA, THE ORANGE’S CLOCKWORK. Eyal Sivan will talk about his work and its background in a film conversation. You can find additional information regarding the film programs and country focus in the intros on the following pages of this catalogue.

In this year’s contests, 59 short and feature films compete for awards endowed with EUR 17,000 in total.

At the exground youth days, the youth film festival for everyone under eighteen and over, awards endowed with approximately EUR 3,000 can be won. For the 8th time, a youth jury will decorate the best international feature film of the youth days. The director’s award is endowed with EUR 2,500. Our youth does not only spend their time in cinemas watching movies though, but grab cameras as well to face the audience’s critical eye in the 7th Wiesbaden Youth Film Contest, again endowed with EUR 450.

It does not need special mentioning that not only can one of the world’s most beautiful cinemas be found in Wiesbaden, but that remarkable films are being made here as well. In case you didn’t know, here is our tip: Sunday, November 13, at twelve noon: Wiesbaden-Special – Short Film Contest… in the Caligari FilmBühne.

In addition to all these tempting offers, physical education must not be forgotten: A WALL IS A SCREEN invites you on November 11 to their 4th cinematic stroll, just in time after the opening film as of 9 pm. So don’t forget your hats and coats. The exground team will take care of your inner warmth!

There will be dancing at exground filmfest’s opening and closing parties, and in between there will be lounges and singing: We simply cannot imagine exground withouth the framework program’s highlight, the exground filmfest karaoke night. Everyone who dares to grab the microphone should make a note of the date November 19.

Even though the team of exground filmfest works honorary year after year for Wiesbaden’s cultural offer and of course for you, dear audience, money is still needed. Film rental costs must be paid, film prints must be transported, guests brought to Wiesbaden and accommodated in a hotel, posters, program brochures, flyers, and catalogues must be printed, adverts placed, advertising space rented – and of course external employees must be paid for designing our products, programming our website, and taking care of our press work, guest relation, and festival office.

Without the aid money from the city and the state, exground filmfest could not survive even though working honorary. With this background, every year we ask the ones politically in charge to think about the fact that an international film festival at this level needs to be financially equipped much better to ensure it can play along with the greats long-term. It is even more astonishing that we managed – in spite of low financial means – to get exground filmfest to the forefront of the national film scene. This can be clearly measured in the number of visitors in Wiesbaden and the State of Hesse. Therefore, the exground team would be more than delighted if its engagement would be rewarded with bigger grants on occasion of exground filmfest’s jubilee in 2012!

Our sincere gratitude goes to all supporters, sponsors, partners, and friends, who helped us again this year to organize exground filmfest 24. We owe special thanks to four Wiesbaden companies: film production company BEWEGTE ZEITEN for their support with the documentaries, Filmgeräteverleih Pille for a special award for the German Short Film Contest, audio studio Klangbezirk for a special award for the Wiesbaden-Special – Short Film Contest, and film production company Hunters and Collectors for the festival trailer.

The team of exground filmfest wishes all visitors ten great days and interesting encounters and discussions with our numerous festival guests.
