After a brain hemorrhage, Maud, a filmmaker, wakes up one morning in a half-dead body that has left her hemiplegic and facing inevitable solitude. Bedridden but determined to pursue her latest film project, she discovers Vilko, a con man who swindles celebrities, on a TV talk show. He is arrogant, magnetic and mesmerizing. This film tells the story of the abuse of weakness to which Maud falls victim.
"Collaborating with an actress as gifted as Huppert brings a necessary humanity to the often-frustrating character. Of all living actresses, only Huppert could capture nuances that alternately elicit sympathy and fierce sexual attraction to a recent stroke victim. At one point, Maud vows that if she ever recovers, 'I’ll be an atomic bomb', and Huppert proves the point." (Variety)
Biography: Catherine Breillat, born in Bressuire/France in 1948, started her carreer as an actress and has appeared in films such as Bertolucci’s ULTIMO TANGO A PARIGI (LAST TANGO IN PARIS). As a screen-writer, she has written scripts for her own films as well as for Federico Fellini’s E LA NAVE VA (AND THE SHIP SAILS ON) and Maurice Pialat’s POLICE, which was based on one of her novels. Making her directorial debut in 1975 with UNE VRAIE JEUNE FILLE (A REAL YOUNG GIRL), she has been a successful international film-maker since causing a furore with her "scandalous" film, ROMANCE in 1999. In 2004, Breillat suffered a cerevral hemorrhage, causing a stroke that paralyzed her left side.
