One of this year’s Cannes winners: Kolia lives in a small village with son and wife. He runs a garage on the land of his ancestors. The land is in demand, as it is located on the seaside: the mayor wants to buy it. When Kolia doesn’t agree, he threatens to expropriate him. A Moscow lawyer, who is his friend, shall help. But he also has his own agenda. A story from contemporary Russia in impressing images.

Biography: Andrei Zvyagintsev, born in 1964 in Novosibirsk/Russia, graduated from the Novosibirsk Actors School in 1984 and started to play on stage in provincial theatres. In the early 1990s he came to Moscow with ambition to star in movies – but his work did not lead to positive results. But when he got the chance to direct, he impressed producers with his skills and got the offer to direct a feature-length. With his film THE RETURN he won the Venice Film Festival’s Golden Lion in 2003.
