Seeking a better life, Oscar and his family decide to go to Manila. Upon arrival, it isn’t long before they fall foul to various inhabitants whose manipulative ways are a daily part of city survival. Oscar lands a job as a driver for an armored truck company and befriends his senior officer Ong. Some simple acts of kindness place Oscar in debt; a debt that leads to blackmail and death."Shot on a shoestring in a language he didn’t understand, Sean Ellis’ METRO MANILA could be the most unlikely hit of the year." (The Guardian)

"METRO MANILA, finally, is a sobering portrayal, not just of the abuse of power, but the abuse of hope, which might be even more unforgivable. As Mai tells Oscar at one point, 'sometimes the only thing left to hang on to is the blade of the knife.' It cuts even deeper when there’s another human being holding the handle." (The Washington Post)
