What constitutes an independent film? What makes it different from Hollywood’s mainstream cinema? The second question is easier to answer since almost all Hollywood productions have a similar structure – a beginning, a middle, and an end. There fore the viewer can easily find his way – after all he needs to provide the box-office takings. That is the reason these films were produced in the first place. The Indies distinguish themselves by the fact that almost always the director is his own author as well. He therefore films his own script and naturally is much closer to the story he needs to film – or in this case: is allowed to film. Grandmaster Francis Ford Coppola runs in this exground filmfest program because for one, he has written an original script after more than 30 years and also has financed his dark family drama TETRO himself. In LIFE DURING WARTIME, Todd Solondz continues the family history of the three Jordan sisters from his masterpiece HAPPINESS with very angry humour – and all this without happy end. Harmony Korine, the enfant terrible of the US-American cinema, has produced a born-and-bred independent film with TRASH HUMPERS. No beginning, no middle, no end in sight! There is also young talent with their debut films in the American Independents program. BEAUTIFUL DARLING by James Rasin explores who Andy Warhol superstar Candy Darling really was. In LIFE 2.0, Jason Spingarn-Koff visits the avatars of "Second Life" in real life. David Hillman Curtis created an overwhelming concert film with RIDE, RISE, ROAR, with David Byrne ("Talking Heads") and Brian Eno.
