It was Quentin Tarantino who said that especially the smaller Asian countries are improving film-wise and contribute artistic innovations to the global cinema. This is a fact that can be observed in our News from Asia program. We state that the Latin American continent has as well and especially come out of it’s shadow existence during the last years, and consistently produces artistically highly interesting films that draw large audiences. The leaden severity which covered these film countries after eras of extremely brutal dictatorships, seems gone and we discover a modern, attractive cinema scene even in smaller film nations such as Colombia, Chile or Uruguay. A new, young generation is at work here – to be seen in this year’s country focus on Latin America.

For example: HIROSHIMA, a hyper-realistic journey through a slacker’s dream, the wonderful documentary UNO, LA HISTORIA DE UN GOL (ONE, THE STORY OF A GOAL) about the national soccer team from 1982, who landed the only goal El Salvador has ever achieved during a soccer world-championship so far, as well as ILUSIONES ÓPTICAS (OPTICAL ILLUSIONS) by decorated director Cristián Jiménez about things we see the way we want to see them. Or the feature film debut NORTEADO (NORTHLESS) by Rigoberto Pérezcano – nominated for ten Mexican Oscars – about a Mexican who desperately tries to cross the U.S. border and always ends up in Tijuana, NOSTALGIA DE LA LUZ (NOSTALGIA FOR THE LIGHT) by master Patricio Guzmán, a poetic parable on astronomy and the Chilean dictatorship under Pinochet, the thrilling documentary PECADOS DE MI PADRE (SINS OF MY FATHER), in which Juan Escobar talks about his father, Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar, for the first time ever, and SONHOS ROUBADOS (STOLEN DREAMS) about three girlfriends from a ghetto in Rio de Janeiro.
