This year’s focus of the News from Asia program lies on the Philippines. For several years, the Philippine cinema experiences an international boom and has become the most important cultural export of the Philippines. Hardly any other country has implemented the digital revolution more successful and changed the film industry more dramatically than the Philippines. All the filmmakers work independently, far off the studio mainstream, and initiate political, social, and aesthetic discussions. The films which are created in this young, extremely dynamic scene, change the way the Philippines and its culture are being viewed. exground filmfest presents three Philippine films as German premieres: LIMBUNAN (THE BRIDAL QUARTER) by Gutierrez Mangansakan II – already acclaimed at this year’s International Film Festival in Venice – shows a young woman being prepared for her wedding to a man she does not know. The thrilling road movie COLORUM byJon Steffan Ballesteros illuminates the grey areas of the Philippine moral of today. The tough thriller CARNIVORE by Ato Bautista shows a degenerated society where only the strong rule. The Taiwanese cinema also has a lot to offer. We present one of this year’s highlights with BÁNG-KAH (MONGA) by Doze Niu. The brilliantly choreographed and staged gangster film with spectacular action sequences describes the decline of the "old" underworld and its traditions. From Japan we present the new film by much decorated director Hirokazu Kore-eda. KUKI NINGYO (AIR DOLL) is a bittersweet love story about a sex doll that comes alive.
