exground filmfest’s youth film section again brings high-quality productions from all over the world, aimed at 12- to 18-year olds, to Wiesbaden. The exground youth days will open with the 6th Wiesbaden youth film contest , where domestic up-and-coming directors compete for the prize money of EUR 450.

The 7th youth days – international youth film contest presents productions from Australia, Germany, Canada, Sweden, and the USA. The variety ranges from roadmovie-musical to intimate play to hip-hop drama. In spite of all their differences regarding subject and make, all films share the fate of having very little chance of ever being shown in German cinemas, which for years have been dominated by Hollywood’s blockbusters.

We start with the far out Aborigines musical BRAN NUE DAE, which ran successfully at this year’s Berlinale. Next in line is the Canadian film J’AI TUÉ MA MERE by exceptional director talent Xavier Dolan, which was besieged with festival awards, about an ambivalent mother-son relationship. The third contest entry comes from Germany: BIS AUFS BLUT – BRÜDER AUF BEWÄHRUNG, about an unusual friendship between two boys from the hip- hop milieu. With THE MYTH OF THE AMERICAN SLEEPOVER, U.S. director David Robert Mitchell introduces us to the American habit of celebrating the end of the summer vacation with cool parties. The international youth film contest 2010 is closed by SEBBE, the empathetic portrait of a 16-year-old Swedish boy who escapes from his dismal everyday life to the world of junk yards to build bizarre objects. We are curious whom the youth jury will choose to take home the prize money of EUR 2,500. Out of competion is LITTLE ALIEN, an Austrian documentary.
