The American Independents in 2012 offer two European premieres, three
German premieres, two directorial debuts and Hollywood stars: the most
impressive acting performances are delivered by Val Kilmer and Matthew
McConaughey, the first of which impersonates a down-and-out writer of
witch novels in Francis Ford Coppola’s unusual, wild spree of gothic
romance and horror western: TWIXT – complete with vampires as topping.
The other one appears much more ascertained, as protagonist in KILLER
JOE of the other Hollywood star director, William Friedkin. Strong women
are in the center of RETURN and SEE GIRL RUN: soldier Kelli keeps on
fighting after she’s returned from war, and Emmie wants more than the
routine of a housewife has to offer, and sets off for a journey into the
past. An indie-lead is swamped with awards directorial debut WHERE THE
ROAD MEETS THE SUN. In a Los Angeles hostel the destinies of four
different men cross, united in their quest for happiness. Three films
deal with music: STRUTTER is a declaration of love for rock ’n’ roll and
accompanies singer Brett Pierce through the ups and downs of a
musician’s life. In RE:GENERATION MUSIC PROJECT electro-DJs work with
famous artists of other musical genres (among them members of "The
Doors"!). TAKEN BY STORM: THE ART OF STORM THORGERSON AND HIPGNOSIS pays
homage to the man, who created the visually most breathtaking images of
music- and pop-culture – on album covers. Finally more Hollywood stars –
this time in interviews: Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, Christopher Walken
and Martin Sheen are part of the impressive documentary JOE PAPP IN FIVE
ACTS, erecting a monument for the unbending theatre producer and director.
