DETLEF deals with the life of 62-year old Detlef Stoffel, one of the preeminent activists of the German gay movement in the 1970s. The documentary is meant to remind us of an "important component of history". Younger people often have no idea, that equal rights and recognition of gays in society had to be fought for by courageous men, say the authors. Men like Detlef Stoffel, who lives in Bielefeld and nurses his 91 year old mother.
Thanks to unique archival material as well as interviews with prominent contemporary witnesses like Lilo Wanders, Corny Littmann and Gustav-Peter Wöhler the film immerses into the Sturm-und-Drang times of the German gay movement and reflects on Detlef’s interesting life predominantly in the 1970s.
