MEMO shows German-Turkish men in the area of conflict between generations and cultures. On the first day of Eid al-Adha, the Islamic festival of sacrifice, brothers Memo and Harun go with their father to rural Brandenburg, to slaughter a sheep. But neither of the sons feels capable of cutting the sheep’s throat. The father’s pressure, the discussions on the sense of this tradition and the unexpected appearance of Memo’s girl-friend with child make the confrontation between father and son unavoidable.
In her diploma film Banu Kepenek authentically and sensitively shows the conflict between tradition and modern times in the German-Islamic stress field of Turkish migrants. Thanks to a good performance of the actor most of all the inner conflict of the older son emerges. After regional German state television RBB showed the film, MEMO premiered at the Montreal World Film Festival.
