To get to the top, you have to take a lot of punches, since only one in 3,000 boxers makes it to the top. Diego, Tony and Brandon want to be champions of one of the amateur boxing tournaments in the city of Monterrey in Mexico, while they seek to get ahead in their daily lives amid the severe social problems in the city. The documentary gives interesting insights in the everyday life of the young protagonists as well in their training sessions and their fights. Furthermore, it shows their coaches and their mentors that have a realistic look on things and act responsibly. 12 OUNCES deals with the hopes, the setbacks, the resignation and the everyday problems of the young boxers. The film – shot in black and white – looks behind the scenes of the boxing business, "flavoured with cool music".
