Ada, mute since birth, arrives to an arranged marriage in the 19th century New Zealand. Ada is shy and close-lipped. The most important object in her life is a piano, which she brought along from Europe. However, her husband Stewart sells the instrument to the worker Baines, whom she should teach how to play the piano. In the course of the lessons, Ada’s reluctance transforms into forbidden affection.
"THE PIANO’S combination of sexual awakening, music (...) and an isolated colonial New Zealand bush setting proved a killer combination. And not just with the critics; Jane Campion became the first female director, and only New Zealander (to date), to clinch Cannes’ prestigious Palme d’Or (...)." (NZ On Screen)
Biography: Jane Campion was born in Wellington/New Zealand. She studied anthropology at Victoria University, then painting, before beginning studies in film at the Australian School of Film, Radio and Television in the early 1980s. She is living in Sydney/Australia.
