A low-budget smash, definitively proving that New Zealanders could make blockbusters too. Young rascal Gerry steals a yellow Mini. Heading south, he meets John, who wants his wife back; and a hitchhiker named Shirl. Soon they are driving to Invercargill to find her, with the cops in hot pursuit. It’s not long before the "Blondini gang" are hailed as folk heroes, onscreen and off.

"GOODBYE PORK PIE was the first New Zealand film to go to Cannes, where it screened in the market in 1980. With its iconic yellow mini, good-natured do-it-youself daring and laconic humour this most Kiwi of road movies quickly sold to 20 territories, and that overseas success helped it to become a huge hit at home as well." (NZ On Screen)

Biography: Formerly working as a teacher in Wellington, Geoff Murphy arguably helped usher in a new age of appreciation for New Zealand cinema, when he consecutively directed three classics of the Kiwi film renaissance in the 1980s: road-trip blockbuster GOODBYE PORK PIE, colonial epic UTU, and end-of-the-world tale THE QUIET EARTH.
