22 films from 14 countries, not counting the coproducing countries, among them four German premieres and one world premiere. 16 feature films and five documentary films plus one art film. More films, more international festival hits and more promising film debuts are present in this section in 2013 than in previous years. Absolute front runner in numbers is Austria – with the wonderful art film SHIRLEY – VISIONS OF REALITY, the taboo-breaking documentary OUTING, going under your skin and the two music documentaries ELEKTRO MOSKVA about Soviet electronic music and WELCOME TO THE MACHINE casting a glance behind the scenes of the global music industry. Three contributions come from France: the German premiere of the film celebrated in Cannes YOU AND THE NIGHT, in which a young couple is waiting for the guests of the midnight orgy. In TIP TOP Isabelle Huppert investigates and searches for the "mole" in the French province, and rock icon Iggy Pop is the "conscience" in the mystical drama set in a circus: MORNING STAR starring Béatrice Dalle and Denis Lavant. Another three films are from Asia, among them two premieres from the Philippines: the documentary MAGDALENA shows the life of a midwife working traditionally, the feature film TERMITARIA evolves around a pregnant nine-year-old. Critical of society is the Chinese film A TOUCH OF SIN, denouncing the social deficits in the country – workers answering back. The Mexican WORKERS as well as the Turkish film THE PARTICLE also revolve around the working world. In the first one two people feel duped by working life – in the second one in contrast Zeynep can’t find work. In the Irish film LOVE ETERNAL a young man feels drawn much more towards the dead rather than the living, whereas the protagonist in HALLEY has to lead a dead man’s life. Also reputed to be dead was the hip rock star from JASON BECKER: NOT DEAD YET after the devastating diagnosis of ALS; but he is still alive and composes with his eyes. MATTERHORN, VIC+FLO SAW A BEAR and FLOATING SKYSCRAPERS are lesbian and gay films, which already won awards in Moscow, Berlin and Karlovy Vary. With BETHLEHEM we have the winner of six Israeli film awards and the country’s Oscar entry as German premiere. The political thriller shows the complicated relationship between a secret agent and his informer.
