exground filmfest 26

24 exgroundfilmfestsechsundzwanzig Atemberaubende Landschaften, wilde Küsten, THE HOBBIT, WHALE RIDER, freundliche Menschen. Breathtaking sceneries, wild coastlines, THE HOBBIT, WHALE RIDER and friendly peo- ple. Seven feature films and two short film programmes offer insights into New Zealand that go beyond these images. In the 1980s, low-budget productions like GOODBYE PORK PIE put an end to an era when New Zealand was mostly used only as an excotic back- drop in films. ONCE WERE WARRIORS most radically broke with the idyllic world image of New Zealand in 1994 and became the most successful film at the box office at home. Meanwhile, Taika Waititi’s BOY took over that position. Peter Jackson rewrites New Zealand Film history in his early work FORGOTTEN SILVER, current shorts show this day’s filmmaking and life in New Zealand and Alyx Duncan tells the universal love story of her parents in THE RED HOUSE. A MUST in such a program are of course New Zealand classics like Jane Campion’s THE PIANO and Tusi Tamasese’s THE ORATOR. fokus neuseeland • focus new zeelandfokus cumentaries ELECTRO MOSKVA about Soviet electronic music and WELCOME TO THE MACHINE casting a glance behind the scenes of the global music industry. Three contributions come from France: the German premiere of the film celebra- ted in Cannes YOU AND THE NIGHT, in which a young coup- le is waiting for the guests of the midnight orgy. In TIP TOP Isabelle Huppert investigates and searches for the „mole“ in the French province, and rock icon Iggy Pop is the „conscience“ in the mystical drama set in a circus: MORNING STAR starring Béatrice Dalle and Denis Lavant. Another three films are from Asia, among them two premieres from the Philippines: the documentary MAG- DALENA shows the life of a midwife working traditionally, the feature film TERMITARIA evolves around a pregnant nine-year-old. Critical of society is the Chinese film A TOUCH OF SIN, denoun- cing the social deficits in the country – workers answering back. The Mexican WORKERS as well as the Turkish film THE PARTICLE also revolve around the wor- king world. In the first one two people feel duped by working life – in the second one in contrast Zeynep can’t find work. In the Irish film LOVE ETERNAL a young man feels drawn much more towards the dead rather than the living, where- as the protagonist in HALLEY has to lead a dead man’s life. Also reputed to be dead was the hip rock star from JASON BECKER: NOT DEAD YET after the devastating diagnosis of ALS; but he is still alive and composes with his eyes. MATTERHORN, VIC+FLO SAW A BEAR and FLOATING SKYSCRAPERS are lesbian and gay films, which already won awards in Moscow, Berlin and Karlovy Vary. With BETHLEHEM we have the winner of six Israeli film awards and the country’s Oscar entry as German premiere. The political thriller shows the complicated relationship between a secret agent and his informer.
