Award-winning and co-produced by Angelina Jolie! 14-year-old Hirut is on her way home when men on horses swoop in and kidnap her. Hirut grabs a rifle and tries to escape, but ends up shooting her would-be husband. In her village, the practice of abduction into marriage is common and one of Ethiopia’s oldest traditions. Lawyer Meaza Ashenafi represents Hirut and argues that she acted in self-defense.

Biography: Zeresenay Berhane Mehari was born and raised in Ethiopia before moving to the USA to study film at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles. In 2002, he received his Bachelor of Arts. He founded the production company Haile Addis Pictures to produce his feature film debut DIFRET.
