Last year Greece with three unusual films was the strongest country in our International section – one of them, XENIA, is the Greek entry for best foreign language film at the Academy Awards 2016. Good reason for the exground team to take a closer look at Greek cinematography. Far from luckily having calmed down calls for „Grexit“ the financial crisis obviously is inspiring powerful and important films.
exground filmfest 28 opens with Athina Rachel Tsangari's very angry character study CHEVALIER. Here men are among themselves. The director is the figurehead of New Greek Film. The noteable and highly topical Greek film RIVERBANKS by Panos Karkanevatos tells a love story on the backdrop of the European refugee crisis. In the grapping thriller WEDNESDAY 04:45 by Alexis Alexiou jazz club owner Stelios has 32 hours to pay back his debt with the Romanian mafia.
In FOREVER, Margarita Manda‘s ode to cinema itself, two lonely souls meet in Athens. And Dimitris Bitos’ directing debut ANEMISTIRAS shows, to what lengths a daughter goes to end the constant fighting between her parents.
In cooperation with the Greek Film Centre we cast our glance on the current filmmaking of young and promising Greek directors: with eight fiction and documentary films, two short film programs, among them many German premieres, and a panel with the directors attending.
