SUDDENLY, LAST WINTER is the story of Gustav and Luca, both thirtysomething and a gay couple for eight years. Nothing out of the ordinary for a western country, one might think. But Gustav and Luca live in Italy and, believe it or not, there are a few places out there in Euroland where the acknowledgement of civil rights for gay couples is still a major issue. Then, "suddenly, last winter", Gustav and Luca’s private life was turned upside down, when the Italian government proposed the introduction of a law that would give additional rights to unmarried and gay couples, prompting a wave of homophobia in Italy. The Vatican and conservative politicians fought against it, preaching that the end of morality and the family would come, if the law is set in place. Gustav and Luca want to understand the different positions and undertake a journey into a country they did not expect to find: their own.
