TALE 52 [ISTORIA 52]
by Alexis Alexiou
Greece 2008 35 mm 97 min. OV Engl. ST

Script: Alexis Alexiou, DoP: Christos Karamanis, Production: Tugo Tugo Productions, Cast: Giorgos Kakanakis, Serafita Grigoriadou, Daphne Labroyianni, Argyris Thanassoulas, Yasemi Kilaidoni, Orpheas Zafiropoulos

In this psycho-thriller telling the beginning and the end of a relationship, memory is the most dangerous place. Iasonas meets Penelope at a dinner with friends. They fall in love head over heels and Penelope moves in with him. Iasonas is happy, as he can share everything with her, down to his old children’s game of controlling dreams. One day he wakes up and Penelope is gone. Iasonas has no clue, where she is and why she left, he can’t remember anything. All attempts to recall the moment of her disappearance lead to intense headache and crazy fantasies. The harder he tries, the less clear the outcome.
The ingenious work of actor Giorgos Kakanakis, showing the depressing portrait of a schizophrenic so lively, that the audience gets goosebumps, the great camera angles of Christos Karamanis and the non-linear story-telling make TALE 52 a masterpiece of its genre.

„The emerging director’s influences are obvious but well digested. Traces of David Lynch or Lars von Trier, from his THE ELEMENT OF CRIME, are evident, but the overall atmosphere created by Alexiou is both personal and strong.“ (Maria Katsounaki, Kathimerini, April 2008)
