TEHRAN WITHOUT PERMISSION [TEHRAN BEDOUNE MOJAVEZ]
by Sepideh Farsi France/Iran 2009 Digital Betacam 83 min. Farsi OV Engl. ST

With this documentary, director Sepideh Farsi provides a fascinating portrait of Tehran, a city she left as a teenager. She hopes to "paint another picture of Tehran, hitherto unseen, but at the same time intimate". Caught between wealth and poverty, traditions and high-tech urban life, this unique collage of everyday scenes is a remarkably effective evocation of the rich diversity of experiences in the Iranian capital.
TEHRAN WITHOUT PERMISSION was entirely shot with a mobile-phone camera, an approach that gave the filmmaker enormous freedom. It enabled her to pass unnoticed and close the distance between herself and her subjects. Although the film does not deal directly with Iran’s social and political problems, a pervasive tension remains palpable in the remarks made by the people filmed.
