In the countryside, two girls from the apostolic Lutheran families are coming close to the marrying age. Both have faithful fiancés in mind. One of the girls, Maria, escapes to work in the city of Helsinki for the summer, as she urgently wants to experience liberty and the "lust of life". The parish sends the girl’s best friend, Raakel, to look after her. The escaped girl, Maria, tries on makeup and tastes cider. She goes out dancing and kisses a stranger. The girl who came to look after her, Raakel, doesn’t want to try anything, but gets tempted. Maria yearns for new experiences, but finally insists Raakel to take her home. Maria gets married and says that she is now content. Raakel has to make a more difficult decision.
