Without dialogues or narration, based on sounds captured in loco, the film explores a vigorous array of
daily activities in this big Japanese coastal city, seriously ruined by an earthquake in January 1995. The images show fire fighters’ training, customers having fun at a karaoke place, the believers’ devotion at a Buddhist temple and the hectic work at a fish factory. KOBE reaches beyond a city portrait, yet itself steps back in favour of the shown. Details alternate with panorama shots, hectic images with calm ones. The coexistence of tradition and the modern makes the contemporary Japanese society with its rituals enigmatic and hermetic.
The film offers an undisguised view on urban life in a metropolis, in best filmic tradition of Walter Ruttmann’s BERLIN – DIE SINFONIE DER GROSSSTADT (BERLIN – SYMPHONY OF A GREAT CITY).
