Israel is in the focus of the Mideast conflict. exground filmfest attempts to show the manifold spectrum of the current film scene in this country in this year’s country focus. We present nine documentaries and feature films, two short film programs of works from the Beit Berl and Sam Spiegel film academies in Jerusalem, the film faculty of the University Tel Aviv, and the Sapir College from Sderot. In addition, we honour the Sam Spiegel Film School on occasion of its 20th anniversary with a tribute program. We kick off the festival with EIN SOMMER IN HAIFA – high-class cinema that looks back at the late 1960s, as does the much decorated film INTIMATE GRAMMAR, based on the novel "Der Kindheitsfinder" by David Grossmann. The most controversial film in the program, Hagar Ben-Hasher’s THE SLUT, will officially kick off the country focus on Sunday, November 13, 2011, and shows a woman’s tragic inaptitude to receive love. The Palestine conflict is broached from different points of view in WOMEN OF HAMAS and PRECIOUS LIFE. What drives women to sacrifice their sons to the jihad – and what drives Israeli doctors to save the life of a Palestine boy even though he could be trained later to become a suicide bomber? Also in the program: CONCRETE and MOSTAR ROUND-TRIP, two nightmarish documentaries about the Gaza war at the turn of the year 2008/09. Two very personal films about his German friend and his extended family are brought to Wiesbaden by Tomer Heymann: I SHOT MY LOVE and THE QUEEN HAS NO CROWN. exground filmfest would like to thank the Embassy of the State of Israel in Berlin, as well as the Jewish Community Wiesbaden for their support.
