The story of serial killer Fritz Haarmann was the opening film of Berlinale 1973 and not just produced a scandal, but also marked Lommel’s artistic and commercial breakthrough as director. The film played in London and Paris cinemas for a year and Andy Warhol invited it to the New York Film Festival. Warhol was so thrilled by DIE ZÄRTLICHKEIT DER WÖLFE [TENDERNESS OF THE WOLVES], that he asked Lommel to stay in New York and produced his first two US films: BLANK GENERATION (1978) and COCAINE COWBOYS (1979). Homosexual child murderer Haarmann (Kurt Raab, wo also wrote the screenplay) lures boys to his home, abuses and kills them to then seel their flesh, their shoes and clothes. Haarmann was arrested in 1924. Lommel sets his story in post-World-War-II Germany. |
