Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s very personal homage to gangster film and feature film debut starring Ulli Lommel, Hanna Schygulla and Fassbinder as well as German film in Berlinale 1969. The film got boos and was recognized only later: "Fassbinder was light years ahead of time" (The New York Times). Lommel has not just the lead part as stone-cold gangster Bruno – he would be called German Alain Delon for it – but also helped with production design, financing and the music. Franz is a pitiful pimp and small fish making his money by having his girlfriend Joanna work the streets. When he goes against the mafia, they send Bruno against him. |
