AFTER WORK
[FREIE ZEITEN]

by Janina Herhoffer
Germany 2014 71 min original version with English subtitles

sat 21 nov 6:00 pm Kulturpalast

Script: Janina Herhoffer, DoP: Tobias Zielony, Janina Herhoffer, Editor: Janina Herhoffer, Production: Janina Herhoffer, Producer: Janina Herhoffer, with: women and men in various leisure-activities groups

A documentary that trains its gaze on group activities – research into leisure of a slightly different kind: a girl band makes music. Women at a slimming course talk about successfully losing weight. A men’s group exercises a role-play on conflicts at work. Other people do yoga, meditate, visit laugh workshops or run laps in a sports center. The film keeps watching and listening to them with true precision.
"The static camera and carefully chosen framings generate clarity and concentration. The montage succeeds in bringing a feeling of abstraction into these concrete observations of recurring situations. A portrait of free time as a project designed to improve one’s body, consciousness or performance skills emerges, whether through discipline, play or conversation." (catalogue of the Berlin International Film Festival)
