"The most beautiful flowers often bloom in secret". The proverb about plants also goes for German cinema, which has a lot more to offer than FACK YU GÖHTE and HONIG IM KOPF. Form your own impression in our section "Made in Germany": three fiction films, three documentaries and three medium-length fiction films show, how exotic, wild, bizarre and droll German cinema can be. For starters there is ALKI ALKI, Axel Ranisch’s latest tragicomic "addiction tamer" round about the topics alcohol and friendship. Tragic indeed the story of award-winning BABAI by Visar Morina: a single father leaves his son in Kosovo and for the sake of a better future flees to Germany. A topic more up to date than ever. Another fire point shows us Farid Eslam in his documentary YALLAH! UNDERGROUND, in which he portrays underground artists in the countries of Arab spring. In his documentary ABOVE AND BELOW Nicolas Steiner shows us "artists" of another sort: survival artists in the USA, living in canals, bunkers or in the middle of the desert. Independent at its best are two works, which grew splendidly without producing giants and/or TV channels: in WEISSE RITTER the experienced duo Mischkowski/Steinkühler continues their Cologne WESTEND cycle – and in FREIE ZEITEN Janina Herhoffer shows, what droll things Germans are busy with in their free time.
