For the first time ever, exground filmfest is presenting the prison inmates’ jury award DAS BRETT for the best film in the series "Made in Germany", endowed with prize money in the amount of EUR 1,000, through the generous support of "Die WERFT – Kulturbühne in der JVA Wiesbaden" (a cultural platform for inmates of Wiesbaden’s correctional facility). Since 2008, DIE WERFT has produced plays with ensembles composed of inmates; this work has expanded to include film projects as part of the core program in 2016. This year, six productions have been nominated for the award, four fiction features and two documentaries. Opening the series is Florian Eichinger’s award-winning film DIE HÄNDE MEINER MUTTER (HANDS OF A MOTHER), in which a family father is no longer able to keep his memories of sexual abuse at the hands of his mother to himself. Martin Hawie’s TORO tells the tale of two underdogs who earn their keep as escorts until they stumble into a spiral of violence. In his gripping adrenaline rush of a thriller VOLT, Tarek Ehlail portrays the crisis of conscience experienced by his eponymous cop protagonist when he accidently kills a refugee while on duty.

With poetic images following the rhythm of the seasons (and almost entirely without dialogues) Ana-Felicia Scutelnicu’s ANISHOARA tells the coming-of-age story of a 15-year-old girl growing up in a remote village in Moldavia. By contrast, Iris Berben takes us along on a wild trip back into the past in ZEIGEN WAS MAN LIEBT (SHOW WHAT YOU LOVE). The documentary by Torsten Stegmann, Frank Göhre and Borwin Richter takes a deep look at the history of the filmmakers of the "Münchener Gruppe" that crystalized around Klaus Lemke. The Hessian production EUROPA – EIN KONTINENT ALS BEUTE by Christoph Schuch and Rainer Krausz could not be timelier on the other hand. In their documentary, the two directors investigate the possible reasons that xenophobia and hate, class struggle and nationalism have run increasingly rampant since the onset of the global financial crisis in 2008. Interview partners such as the Euro MP Fabio de Masi and financial expert "Mr. Dax" Dirk Müller will be present at the subsequent panel discussion to answer questions and share their views.
