by Francisco Franco

QUEMAR LAS NAVES means "burn the ships" and stands for the radical changes in teenage years: siblings Helena and Sebastian have to look after their cancer stricken mother, a former pop singer and „grande dame“. In the seclusion of their house they lose contact to the outside world to a degree, that they can trust each other only and fully concentrate on each other and their love. But Sebastian develops a secret homoerotic relationship with Juan, the newcomer and go-getter in the class. Sebastian spends all his time with Juan, while Helena has to stay home, tortured by jealousy and loneliness. After their mother’s death the siblings’ life seems to go wrong for good...

"With remarkable self-confidence theatre director Franco masters the step to feature film and delivers one of the best films of contemporary Mexican cinema. He drives his young actors to amazing performances." (Variety)
