Reygadas, well known for his brutal ways of uncovering the weak points of Mexican society, surprises us here with a visual masterpiece: in the North of Mexico still today live Mennonites of German origin, speaking Plautdietsch, a Frisian dialect. Slowly, they open up to the modern world and start using cars, electricity and medicine. Farmer Johan lives with his wife and six children. He has broken god’s law, as he has fallen in love with another woman. He doesn’t hide the affair, but suffers from his feelings. He believes Marianne to be his one big love, but doesn’t want to leave his family. He is waiting for his feelings to vanish, but his love for Marianne is too strong. Johan has to take a decision, but he takes his time, as he doesn’t want to hurt either woman.
Shot entirely with non-professional actors, the film takes you into a perfectly different world on different time.
