COWS [VACAS]
by Julio Médem
Spain 1991 35 mm 96 min. OV engl. ST

Script: Julio Médem, DoP: Carles Gusi, Production: Ricardo García Arrojo, Javier Orce, Víctor Sánchez, Cast: Carmelo Gómez, Karra Elejalde, Emma Suárez, Anna Torrent

The story of two Basque families, living across from each other on caserios (farms) and who, regardless of the virtually idyllic seclusion, get drawn into the political troubles of the Carlist wars. At times the French, at times the Spanish court sends troops to recruit young men for their wars. Women remain behind with old men and children. Casually, Médem tells us about Basque traditions like wood-chopping and how necessities evolve into competitions and then enmity between neighbours. In his feature film debut, the director puts the mystical perception of people’s dealing with nature in form of a small forest in the centre. The eponymous COWS’ point of view plays a role as well.
VACAS is a family chronicle going deep and turning dramatic in García Marquez’ style of "One Hundred Years of Solitude". Not least Carmelo Gómez and Emma Suárez make it an impressive film.
