THE BASQUE BALL: SKIN AGAINST STONE
[LA PELOTA VASCA. LA PIEL CONTRA LA PIEDRA]

by Julio Médem

The Basque conflict is centuries old and active still today. The changing protagonists fight with most various goals and methods, come from all social strata, speak at least three languages and a few dialects more. They pursue contradictory, competing or comparable interests. The places of their direct confrontations are located in at least two countries, three autonomous regions, seven provinces and many towns and villages. Contradictions and complexity, wherever you look. In 2002, Julio Médem took on the task to cover all that in a documentary
– and managed. Everyone, who has to say something substantial about the issue, he put in front of the camera and let them speak and thus unfolds the vast mosaic of this political conflict in all its dimensions in front of the audience and shows the status quo of an old conflict, which the oldest European people took into the 21st century.
