For years, the German film was not talked about very much. But in 2008 the boom started: 34 million viewers bought tickets for German movies. In 2009, exground filmfest decided to dedicate a program to this comeback. The audience number at our film festival as well as nationwide proved us right. The victory march of German films continued in 2009: In spite of the economy crisis, even 37 million people watched German productions. Two films from Germany even managed to hit the 3 million mark: ZWEIOHRKÜKEN and WICKIE UND DIE STARKEN MÄNNER.
The forecast for 2010 is positive and we really hope that the trend will go on. exground filmfest pays tribute to the growing importance of German films – internationally as well – by presenting 17 entries in the section Neues aus Deutschland (News from Germany). Among these are as many as four fictional debuts: In ENTZAUBERUNGEN (DISENCHANTMENTS), Andreas Pieper tells four stories about the labyrinth of life. SASCHA (SASHA), son of foreign workers from Ex-Yugoslavia, cannot come out in Dennis Todorovi?’s film. In the tragicomedy MY SUICIDE by Olaf Saumer, five people want to commit suicide together. The six adolescent friends, who go camping by a lake together, face totally different problems in the horror film LANGE NACHT (THE LONGEST NIGHT) by Till Kleinert.
A focus of the program lies on the absolutely fabulous documentaries. KICK IN IRAN by Fatima Geza Abdollahyan portraits the first Iranian sportswoman who qualified for the Olympic games – in Taekwondo! DIE KINDER VOM FRIEDRICHSHOF (THE CHILDREN OF THE COMMUNE) by Juliane Großheim deals with the commune of Viennese action artist Otto Mühl, and with B 224, KOBE, and MILLTOWN, MONTANA we present three films by decorated documentary filmmaker Rainer Komers.
