An arrival in the forest: When Georges, Anna and their two children get to their holiday lodge they encounter foreigners. They stare into the barrel of a rifle that is held by the father of the intruder family, asking for supplies, water and gasoline. He kills Georges and decamps with the victuals and the car, sparing Anna and the kids. An odyssey through deserted landscapes begins, where the only concern is survival.

What starts as family story turns out to be a collective tragedy. Haneke portrays in his masterpiece the archaic, wolf-like brutality among humans following the apparent collapse of civilisation. WOLFZEIT displays its powerful effects particularly through the clarity of structure and complete absence of science fiction elements. The despair takes place here and now, creeping under the skin of the spectator.
