In 1968 homosexuality was de-criminalized in GDR, but remained a taboo. Some lesbians and gays just wanted to live "perfectly normal" lives, others resisted social exclusion. Suspiciously observed by state security, they gathered under the roof of the Protestant church. The "homos" became a political issue. The film tells exciting, surprising stories from the everyday life of a minority in GDR.
"The GDR was a fundamentalist heterosexual system, in which differences had no place. The film OUT IN EAST BERLIN shows gay and lesbian life before the wall came down. Biography:
Jochen Hick, born in Darmstadt, studied film at the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg and in Bologna. He works as a freelance author, journalist, director and producer for film and TV and also teaches at Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin (dfbb).
Andreas Strohfeldt was born north of Berlin. After his studies in Moscow he lived mostly in Petersburg/Russia in the 1990s. There he organized queer film festivals and retrospectives. He is author and director of various short films.
