In Hong Kong, pickpockets are called "sparrows", as for stealing quickness is essential. Kei is one of those sparrows and pilfers people in the streets of purses and wristwatches. He and his partners live quite comfortably off the loot and look like nice gentlemen rather than common thieves. When Kei’s not working, he photographs street scenes. One day attractive Chun Lei gets in front of his camera. Immediately he falls in love with this fascinating woman, but not just he turns mad, his buddies have fallen for her as well. But she seems to harbour a dark secret. Chun Lei coaxes her into stealing a mysterious key, a seemingly easy task...
SPARROW was in this year’s Berlinale competition and is quite an unusual film for Johnnie To, who got famous with racy action films. The film is directed like a twinkle-toed musical, but without singing, weapons or obvious fight scenes.
