With the record number of 18 films, including numerous German premieres and promising directorial debuts, the 2011 International program is represented stronger than ever. The decorated documentaries and feature films come from 13 countries. Master director Álex de la Iglesia’s latest work MAD CIRCUS is presented as well as films from Latin and South America – traditionally a strong presence at exground filmfest. Buenos Aires is in the center of MEDIANERAS, in which two people are separated by the city, and in PHASE 7 terrible things happen in a high-rise building. From Mexico comes a poetic road movie, decorated with the Silver Bear for best camera work at the Berlin Film Festivasl – THE PRIZE. The documentaries FORBIDDEN and NO MORE FEAR from Egypt and Tunisia broach the issue of the Arabic spring. We also present two Russian documentaries by Andrey Gryazev, dealing with the difficult living conditions for social fringe groups. The Austrian films EMPIRE ME and PAPA show mini societies fighting a globalized world as well as a Viennese rapper macho looking for his father role. In HEAT WAVE from France, the meeting of five people ends in tragedy. The same happens to the two friends in THE CHRISTENING and to the cop from SMALL TOWN MURDER SONGS. THE BLACK POWER MIXTAPE 1967–1975 presents unseen historical images of the Black Power movement, while SENSATION is funny, for a change. The droll German-Polish co-production SOMMER AUF DEM LAND is about a mourning widower, who believes his late wife is re-incarnated in a cow.
