Let exground filmfest carry you away to other worlds and cultures and experience audience favourites from other festivals, Academy Award nominated films and movie stars. 15 films from 21 countries, from Argentina to Chile, Israel, Macedonia and the Philippines all the way to Thailand, including several German premieres, eleven fiction features and four documentaries, with numerous prize winners among them. Chile is represented with no less than two films that confront the country’s past: in ENDLESS POETRY the director recalls the avant-garde of the 1940s and 50s in an equally poetic and mad journey back in time. Two-time Academy Award nominee Pablo Larraín tells the story of Nobel prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda with the help of excellent performances, in particular from Gael García Bernal. For his most recent film IT’S ONLY THE END OF THE WORLD, which was honoured with the Jury Grand Prix in Cannes, Xavier Dolan assembled an all-star cast in front of the camera. Marion Cotillard, Vincent Cassel and Nathalie Baye shine in this family drama

about a son who returns home to inform his family that he is mortally ill. Saar, the protagonist of the Heymann brothers’ newest documentary WHO’S GONNA LOVE ME NOW? (recipient of the Audience Award in the Berlinale’s Panorama section), is faced with much the same problem. And then there’s KATER (TOMCAT), which also picked up a Teddy at the Berlinale, wherein a violent episode shakes a seemingly perfect couple’s relationship to its core. The Macedonian thriller AMOK, a parable about a land in which corruption and criminality cast a shadow over everyday life, deals with violence too. Fortunately, cathartic comic relief also makes an appearance with REQUIREMENTS TO BE A NORMAL PERSON from Spain and HORTENSIA from Argentina, which both attempt to answer the question of what is normal (hint: it’s certainly not the chaos that an inexperienced hospice attendant ¬ in a brilliant turn by Carmen Maura brings to her client’s long final night in VANITY). Finally, dive into unexplored worlds with us like hurricanes in 3D or the mind of Guy Maddin.
