EMPIRE ME – DER FALL CHODORKOWSKI – REMINGTON AND THE CURSE OF THE ZOMBADINGS and many more
On the second festival weekend, exground filmfest launches a cinematic fireworks: „News from Germany“ are represented by the politically explosive documentary DER FALL CHODORKOWSKI (KHODORKOVSKY) about the former richest Russian and by now the country’s most famous inmate, by director Cyril Tuschi who will be a guest at the festival (Caligari, 8pm), and by KIEZKICK UND PUNKROCK by Wiesbaden director Tim Gorbauch, who approaches the fans of the 1. FC St. Pauli soccer club in his latest documentary, taking them on a musical journey (Murnau Filmtheater, 6pm).
From Russia, the festival presents the moving documentary MINER'S DAY: SANYA UND SPARROW about former miners by Andrey Gryazev, who won the Russian national award „Bay Twig“ for best debut film (Kulturpalast, 6pm), and the Philippines bring us the in-your-face horror-trash-comedy REMINGTON AND THE CURSE OF THE ZOMBADINGS, in which little Remington receives a bizarre curse because he makes fun of gays (Kulturpalast,10pm). Another film you should not miss is the documentary cum road movie EMPIRE ME by Austrian director Paul Poet about the smallest self-determined and self-governed states in the world (Caligari, 5.30pm).
The retrospective dedicated to Israeli director Eyal Sivan, who is known as a resolute critic of Israel’s settlement politics, closes today with THE SPECIALIST, in which the documentary filmmaker retraces the trial against Adolf Eichmann, who - following Hitler’s orders -deported millions of innocent people to the concentration camps (Murnau Filmtheater, 3pm).

On Friday, exground filmfest presents part 2 of the international ON-VIDEO-Contest, which takes place for the tenth time already (Caligari 5:30pm, 2nd screening on Saturday, November 19, Kulturpalast, 8pm).
In addition, exground filmfest offers several German premieres today: The Mexican feature film debut by Iria Gómez Concheiro THE CINEMA HOLD UP (MurnauFilmtheater, 10pm), the cheerful production AU PAIR, KANSAS from the USA (Murnau Filmtheater, 8pm), as well as GUILTY OF ROMANCE, part 3 of the „Hatred“-trilogy by Japanese enfant terrible Sion Sono, director of LOVE EXPOSURE and COLD FISH (Caligari, 10:15pm).
The festival also presents SENSATION, an Irish-Dutch attack at the laughing muscles about love and sex (Caligari, 8pm).

ON-VIDEO-CONTEST – READING – FILMS, FILMS, FILMS
Today, exground filmfest celebrates a small jubilee: For the tenth time, the festival presents the international ON-VIDEO-Contest, in which 20 films from 16 countries compete for the jury award endowed with 1,500 Euros. The program is split into two parts and begins this Thursday with part 1 (Caligari, 5:30 pm; 2nd screening on Friday, Nov 19, Kulturpalast, 8 pm).
A cinematic highlight of the day is the American indie production THE OFF HOURS, whose protagonist is also the star of this year’s exground poster. Director Megan Griffiths and producer Lacey Leavitt will introduce their film in person at exground filmfest (Caligari, 8 pm). Other filmic highlights are the German production TAGE DIE BLEIBEN, which recently won the NDR talent film award (Murnau Filmtheater, 8 pm), as well as two highly personal films by Israeli documentary filmmaker Tomer Heymann: I SHOT MY LOVE (Kulturpalast, 8 pm) and THE QUEEN HAS NO CROWN (Kulturpalast, 10 pm). In addition, exground filmfest presents today the moving documentary NO MORE FEAR, in which director Mourad Ben Cheikh portraits three lives in the middle of the Arabic spring (Murnau Filmtheater, 6 pm).
Great entertainment is also guaranteed by today’s framework program: In line with the country focus on Israel, Oliver Polak holds a reading of his best-seller of the same name ICH DARF DAS, ICH BIN JUDE! (I AM ALLOWED TO DO THIS - I AM JEWISH!).Subtle and full of humor, Polak comments on his mother’s strict Jewish rules and his “double circumcision”. Polak‘s performance in the stand-up-show JUD SÜSS-SAUER received the Kulturnews award „Best Entertainment 2010“ (Kulturpalast, 8 pm).

Today exground filmfest takes you on a cinematic trip around the world. Beautiful images of Mexico can be seen in the award-winning film A STONE'S THROW AWAY by Sebastian Hiriart (Caligari, 8pm). A great picture book of Buenos Aires is MEDIANERAS, a humorous film about virtual and urban loneliness (Murnau, 10pm). exground youth days present the US film JESS & MOSS, located in Kentucky's endless tabac fields. Director Clay Jeter and actress Sarah Hagan will be presenting their multi-award-winning film personally in Wiesbaden (Caligari, 5:30pm).
As part of the country focus Israel, exground presents four current short films from the university Tel Aviv in the short film program ISRAEL II, as well as one work from the film faculty of the Sapir College in Sderot in the south of Israel (Murnau Filmtheater, 6pm). The multiple award winning film PRECIOUS LIFE tells the story of Palestine Raida and her 4 months old son, who was born without an immune system (Kulturpalast, 8pm).

On Tuesday, exground filmfest presents a 3-film-program of excellent documentaries in the „News from Germany“ section, among them the essayistic short film TRACES OF AN ELEPHANT by Vanessa Nica Mueller – winner of the German contest of the International Short Film Festival in Oberhausen 2011 (Murnau Filmtheater, 6 pm). In another 3-film program, special German short films will be presented in the presence of numerous guests, among them the impressive chamber play BEREDTES SCHWEIGEN by Julia Keller (Caligari, 10:15 pm).
Another German production is Benjamin Cantu's STADT LAND FLUSS in the youth days program, decorated at the International Film festival in Berlin with the „Siegessäule“ award for best feature film (Caligari, 5:30 pm). Further recommendations: The impressive documentary CONCRETE, in which former soldiers of the Israeli army talk about their duty in the Gaza Strip (Kulturpalast, 8 pm), and THE PRIZE (EL PREMIO) by Mexican director Paula Markovitch, whose autobiographical film was decorated with the Silver bear for best camera at the International Film festival in Berlin (Murnau Filmtheater, 8 pm).

In the course of this year's country focus Israel, exground 24 presents a retrospective dedicated to director Eyal Sivan, which starts on Monday with AQABAT-JABER, PEACE OF NO RETURN? (Murnau Filmtheater, 6pm). After the screening, the festival invites you to a film talk with Eyal Sivan. Eyal Sivan is known as a strict critic of Israel's politics. Among his best-known films are THE SPECIALIST (Murnau Filmtheater, 19.11. 3pm), a documentary about the Eichmann trial, and JAFFA, THE ORANGE‘S CLOCKWORK (Murnau Filmtheater, 17.11. 10pm), a documentary about the Israel foundation myth.
exground filmfest also invites you to a film talk about the country focus Israel (Kulturpalast, 10pm). Participants in the panel discussion are our Israele guests Suha Arraf (WOMEN OF HAMAS, director), David Fisher (MOSTAR ROUND-TRIP, director), Noam Levy (CONCRETE, editor), and Eyal Sivan (RETROSPECTIVE). The discussion will be led by Hannes Karnick (AG DOK).
Further film highlights of the day are the internationally decorated youth film BROTHERS by Marcel Rasquin from Venezuela (Caligari, 5.30pm) and the much-discussed film debut by Hagar Ben Asher DIE ZÜGELLOSE [THE SLUT] (Caligari, 10:30pm).
Monday evening: HER MIT DEM TRASH! - the traditional motto of the exground-Gong-Show (Kulturpalast, 10pm). Short films of up to 10 minutes duration can be submitted by everybody between 8pm and 9pm on location. All productions which are not gonged out by the jury will be rated on a ten point scale. The winner film receives the golden exground cucumber and 50 Euros.

Grand opening of exground filmfest 24 – Tonight!
exground filmfest 24 will be opend with EIN SOMMER IN HAIFA (Caligari FilmBühne, 19 h, Israel 2010, OV Germ. ST) by Avi Nesher – as part of this year’s focus on films from Israel.
At 21 h everyone is invited to join the cineastic walk through downtown Wiesbaden.
For the fourth time, the team from A WALL IS A SCREEN from Hamburg is going to illuminate Wiesbaden’s facades. Again, short films from all genres will be projected onto walls. Destination of the cinematic stroll is the Kulturpalast, where the OPENING NIGHT PARTY of exground filmfest 24 will begin at 10 pm.

Be part of exground-Gong-Show
Same procedure as every year: make way for people who want to show their films before an audience. In the age of Facebook and Twitter there is one motto: the main issue is that it’s published – no matter how weird it is! So, just bring your DVD (max length: 10 min.) and hand it in on November 14, 2011, between 8 pm and 9 pm in the Kulturpalast. All films that are not being "gonged out" will be rated by a jury on a ten-point scale. The director with the highest score can be pleased as punch about the "Golden exground Cucumber" and the prize money of EUR 50.

Closing of exground filmfest 23
On Sunday, November 21, 2010, exground filmfest ended its enormously successful ten-day-run. During the last ten days, the films from all over the world were met with great interest and drew a huge international crowd to the cinemas – to participate in the most important platform for German independent films. In total, exground filmfest had 14,000 guests, among them 11,000 at the screenings.

In the GERMAN SHORTFILM CONTEST,the highlight and audience favourite of exground filmfest, 10 films compete for the award for best German short film, endowed with 6 ooo Euros in total. The audience decides!
The award ceremony will be held after the screening. Apart from best German short film, the winners of the ON-VIDEO-CONTEST, the WIESBADEN-SPECIAL – SHORT FILM CONTEST, the exground youth days and the GONG-SHOW will be announced.
And then there will be dancing!
Dr. Love plays everything that stimulates dancing mood, cocktail consumption and human brotherhood in an excessive way. Old and new, Funk, Rock ’n’ Roll and scattered electronic micro-elements – all of this and more will be pulled out of his magic DJ case.

Last rounds! Saturday-Night-Fever.
After everybody whetted their appetite watching EL BULLI, we present the latest work of Chilean Patricio Guzmán at 5:30 pm in the Caligari: NOSTALGIA DE LA LUZ [NOSTALGIA FOR THE LIGHT] - an essayistic documentary whose theme range develops into a poetic parable abot astronomy and the history of Chile in the last 50 years.
In the Kulturpalast at 6pm, we take a look at the current events in Burma: Myanmar ist he new name given to Burma by the military government. In the BURMA HEUTE program we present five films from the Yangon Film School, a non-governmental development project based in Berlin, since no cultural institutions are allowed to work in the oppressed country.
At 8pm we show SOL NA NEBLINA [SUN IN THE MIST] at the Murnau, the decorated work of Brazilian Werner Schumann, which impressively shows the survival struggle of two underdogs stranded at Brazil’s south coast.
Our country focus continues at 10pm in the Murnau with PARAÍSO [PARADISE] by Héctor Gálvez. Paraíso, Paradise, is the name of Lima’s slum. One month ago, Che Loco was murdered here by a brutal gang. His friends mourn the tragic loss and simultaneously realize the daily toughness of their being.
At 8pm in the Caligari: EN GANSKE SNILL MANN [A SOMEWHAT GENTLE MAN]. The most beautiful film title of 2010! Norwegian director Hans Petter Moland created an irresistably cool and eloquent comedy about life in the past tense in a world that is rationalised through and through.
Further East in the Caligari at 10:15pm: BANG-KAH [MONGA] by Doze Niu from Taiwan, is a brilliantly staged and choreographed gangster film with spectacular action sequences.
Last but not least at 10pm in the Kulturpalast: TRASH HUMPERS by the great Harmony Korine. The enfant terrible of the American cinema has made a true independent film in which he settles old scores with middle class morals - on VHS.

As of appr. 10pm, the foyer of the Caligari turns into a show stage: Everybody is invited to show their talent at this year’s KARAOKE.

A must for all fans of Post Punk in Melbourne at the end of the Seventies, featuring Nick Cave, Michael Hutchence (INXS), „The Birthday Party“, „Rowland S. Howard“, „Primitive Calculators“, „The Ears“ and „Whirlywirld“ among others.
In the Kulturpalast at 10pm: CARNIVORE by Philippine director Ato Bautista is an extremely tough thriller with dark, athmospheric images, showing a degenerate society where only the strong rule.

Auf dem 13. Internationalen Werbefilmfestival spotlight in Mannheim zeichnete das Publikum den exground filmfest Trailer mit einer silbernen Trophäe aus. Dieses Jahr wurden aus 210 Einreichungen sechzig Werbespots und Bewegt-Bild-Kampagnen ausgewählt um in Mannheim vor ca. 2000 Zuschauern präsentiert zu werden.

Closing of exground filmfest 22
On Sunday, November 22, 2009, exground filmfest finished successfully. In the past ten days, the films from all over the world found huge acclaim with the international audience who travelled to the Hessian state capital Wiesbaden for the 22nd time already – for the most important platform for the German independent film. This year, the festival lured around 2.000 viewers more into the cinemas than last year. exground filmfest had a total of 14.000 guests, 11.000 of which visited the film screenings.
German short film contest
In two screenings, the audience decided on this year’s winners of the GERMAN SHORT FILM CONTEST. The final vote took place on Sunday in the sold-out Caligari FilmBühne. The first prize went to Michael Ester’s film IL GIARDNIO. The award is endowed with 3.000 Euros and sponsored by the Cultural Office of the state capital Wiesbaden. BOB by directors Jacob Frey and Harry Fast reached the second place, endowed with 2.000 Euros, sponsored by the BEWEGTE ZEITEN film production GmbH. The third prize went to JUDAS AND JESUS. Directors Olaf Encke and Claudia Romero received 1.000 Euros, again sponsored by the Cultural Office of the state capital Wiesbaden.
In the course of the award ceremony, the winners of the other exground contests were announced as well.
youth days – International youth film contest
The jury of the international youth film contest gave the only feature film award of exground filmfest to the US entry MY SUICIDE by David Lee Miller. The youth jury explained their decision as follows: „The unique collage of documentary and staged images, of old film snippets and animations, accompanied with expressive music, has carried us over. This experimental and extraordinary execution turns this film into a work of art that provides food for thought not only for us adolescents.“ Thanks to the state capital Wiesbaden, the award is endowed with 450 Euros; certificate and cheque were accepted by leading actor Gabriel Sunday.
International ON-VIDEO contest
The international ON-VIDEO CONTEST was won by Dutch cartoon NOTEBOOK (NOTEBOEK). The professional jury, consisting of last year’s winner Marion Pfaus, as well as Martin Gessner and Jürgen Kittel, was convinced by the complexity and personal touch of the Dutch short film. Director Evelien Lohbeck accepted the award of 1.500 Euros in person, which for the first time has been sponsored by the exground circle of friends. Honorary mentions from the jury went to MISS KONG (director: Minna Suoniemi), SECRET ENCOUNTER (director: Danilo Vogt), and WAGAH (director: Supriyo Sen).
Wiesbaden-Special – Short film contest
Already last Sunday, the audience decided on the winner of the WIESBADEN-SPECIAL SHORT FILM CONTEST, which is exclusively reserved for filmmakers from Wiesbaden. In the course of the award ceremony, director Kolja Erdmann was honoured for his film DREISSIG. Andrea Wink from the festival team presented the certificate and the prize money of 500 Euros, sponsored by the Wiesbadener Kurier newspaper.
Betting On Shorts
This year again, exground filmfest participated in the international contest BETTING ON SHORTS: MORE THAN A EUROVISION OF SHORTFILM. 12 short films were shown simultaneously in just as many cities. In every city, a jury elected the winner, while the audience could place bets on their favourite. In Wiesbaden, the British film SECTION 44 by Daniel Wilson was the winner, while MEMOTECH by Marianna Mørkøre & Rannvá Káradóttir from the Faro islands was the winner of the international contest.

Following the award ceremony, the festival audience and the filmmakers celebrated friskily in the foyer of the Caligari FilmBühne. The Rock ’n’ Roll Quartett laid the ground, DJ Ras-Andi then took over the musical design of the closing party.

The date for the next exground filmfest is already fixed. Between November 12 and November 21, 2010, numerous international filmmakers will present their works in Wiesbaden vorstellen. Until then, the filmfest will present a monthly „exground film of the month“ in the Caligari FilmBühne, on December 16 this will be Quentin Tarantino’s INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS.

NOKAN - DIE KUNST DES AUSKLANGS (DEPARTURES) erzählt von dem arbeitslosen Cellist Daigo, der sich sich bei einem „Reise“-Unternehmen bewirbt. Erst später findet er heraus, daß die Kunden für ihre letzte Reise vorbereitet werden, ihre Beerdigung. Der bewegende und zugleich komische Film erhielt in diesem Jahr den Auslands-Oscar! Die MC-Szene und den Baile-Funk in den „Slums“ von Rio de Janeiro gibt es um 22.00 Uhr im Murnau Filmtheater zu entdecken: FAVELA ON BLAST – visuell und akustisch ein Leckerbissen.

Werde ALMOST ELVIS beim Karaoke!
In der Sektion INTERNATIONAL präsentiert Paul Cotters sein Regiedebüt BOMBER (20 Uhr, Caligari FilmBühne). Ein britischer Veteran bricht zu einer Wiedergutmachungsreise auf, um sich bei dem Dorf zu entschuldigen, dass er im Zweiten Weltkrieg versehentlich bombardierte.
Die argentinische Oberschicht schließt sich selbst in goldenen Käfigen wird. In A WEEK ALONE (20 Uhr, Murnau Filmtheater) verbringt eine Gruppe von Kindern Ihre Zeit mit Computerspielen und Einbrüchen bei den Nachbarn. Erst durch das Kindermädchen kommen sie in den Kontakt mit der Außenwelt.
Auch musikalisch hat der Freitag einiges zu bieten: ALL TOMORROW’S PARTIES (22.15 Uhr, Murnau Filmtheater) ist eine Dokumentation über das gleichnamige Independent-Musikfestival. Oldie-Sender spielen seine größten Hits immer noch tagtäglich. „Ain't no Sunshine“ oder „Just The Two of Us“ sind nur zwei der Songs, die Bill Withers unvergessen machen. Doch schon vor 25 Jahren entschied er sich gegen das Showbusiness und für seine Familie. Im letzten Jahr haben wir Spanien durch den Länderschwerpunkt große Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt. Aber auch in diesem Jahr sind starke Filme von der iberischen Halbinsel zu sehen. herzlich Willkommen zu einem neuen Wettbewerb.
Aus 150 Einreichungen haben es acht Filme in die letzte
Runde des FILM AB! 50-Wettbewerbs geschafft, der heute um
19.00 Uhr in der Caligari FilmBühne präsentiert wird. Der
Themenkomplex „Alter und Arbeit“ waren die Vorgabe,
herausgekommen sind vollkommen unterschiedliche Ansätze. Die
fünfköpfige Jury wird noch am selben Abend entscheiden und
Preisgelder im Wert von 10 000 Euro verteilen.
Die Sektion international bietet einen
seltenen, intimen Einblick in den Iran. TEHERAN WITHOUT PERMISSION wurde mit einer Handykamera
gefilmt und zeigt die Widersprüche der islamische Republik.
Einerseits einen strengen Gottesstaat anderseits illegale und
wilde Parties. (18.11.2009, 20 Uhr, Kulturpalast). Das Bild wird
durch sechs iranische Kurzfilme vervollständigt (18.11.09, 18
Uhr, Kulturpalast).
Die türkisch deutsche Koprodution AUTUMN (18.11.09, 20 Uhr, Alpha Kino) erzählt in poetischen Bildern von
Yusuf, der in den 90ern aus der politischen Haft entlassen wird
und in sein Heimatdorf nahe des Schwarzen Meers zurückkehrt.
Dort verliebt er sich in Eka, ein georgische Prostituierte.

Der Dienstag startet mit KATJA’S SISTER, dem
dritten Beitrag im internationalen Wettbewerb der exground youth
days, heute um 17.30 Uhr in der Caligari FilmBühne.
Der DEUTSCHE KURZFILM-WETTBEWERB ist ein Klassiker beim exground filmfest, den man auf keinen
Fall verpassen darf. Animierte Filme, Experimentalfilme,
Kurzspielfilme und Dokumentationen, alles ist vertreten. Wegen
großem Andrang gibt es gleich zwei Vorstellungen: heute um 20
Uhr in der Caligari FilmBühne und am Sonntag mit anschließender
Preisverleihung (22.11.09, 19 Uhr, Caligari FilmBühne).
Gewonnen haben jetzt schon die Filme von SHORT MATTERS! -
TEIL II (17.11.09, 18 Uhr, Kulturpalast). In dieser
Kurzfilmrolle laufen die PRIX-UIP-Preisträger der Festivals in
Angers, Berlin, Grimstad, Rotterdam, Venedig, Vila do Conde und
Sarajevo.
Kurzfilme gibt es außerdem aus Schweden, dem Land, dem wir in
der Sektion Fokus und der Retrospektive in diesem Jahr besondere
Aufmerksamkeit schenken. SCHWEDEN II – LIEBE UND
HIEBE ist um 20 Uhr im Kulturpalast zu sehen. Im Anschluss
stellt Johan Carlsson seinen Dokumentarfilm über Roy Andersson

Neues aus Deutschland stellt die Filme vor, von denen man auch im Ausland noch hören wird. Mit dabei sind starke Dokumentationen wie DIE ANWÄLTE – EINE DEUTSCHE GESCHICHTE (20.00 Uhr Caligari FilmBühne), in der Regisseurin Birgit Schulz die Lebenswege der RAF-Verteidiger Otto Schily, Hans-Christian Ströbele und Horst Mahler nachzeichnet. Birgit Schulz ist anwesend!
Unser härtester Wettbewerb beendet den vierten Festivaltag. Längst Kult ist die exground-GONG-SHOW HER MIT DEM TRASH! (22.00 Uhr Kulturpalast). Wenn der Film zu langweilig ist, bricht die Jury die Vorstellung sofort ab. Filmeinreichungen zwischen 20.00 und 21.00 Uhr im Kulturpalast möglich. Der Eintritt ist frei!

A WALL IS A SCREEN lautet das Motto aller Filmfans. Schon zum zweiten Mal beweisen wir es. Beim Stadtrundgang ab 21 Uhr (Treffpunkt: vor der Caligari FilmBühne) werfen wir ausgewählte Kurzfilme an die Fassaden der Wiesbadener Innenstadt.
Es ist Freitag, der 13. Selbstverständlich hat exground filmfest den passenden Film zum Gruseldatum: I SELL THE DEAD (22.15 Uhr Caligari FilmBühne). Kurz vor seiner Hinrichtung erzählt der Grabräuber Arthur von seinen Schandtaten.
Kein exground ohne die legendäre ERÖFFNUNGSPARTY im Kulturpalast. An den Plattentellern „One Ticket to Paris“ und ein alter Bekannter: Jörg Buttgereit. Sein neuester Streifen CAPTAIN BERLIN VERSUS HITLER kommt morgen (Sa 14 Nov 22.00 Uhr Kulturpalast).

Start des wichtigsten deutschen Independent-Festivals:
exground filmfest 22 bietet weit mehr als „nur“ Filme
Am Freitag, den 13. November 2009, öffnet das exground filmfest zum 22. Mal seine Pforten für unabhängig produzierte Filme aus aller Welt. Das Filmfest ist die wichtigste Plattform für den Independent Film in Deutschland und eines der größten Filmfestivals in Hessen. In Zahlen ausgedrückt: Zweihundertdreißig Kurz- und Langfilme aus einundvierzig Ländern flimmern in zehn Tagen über vier Kinoleinwände. Rund hundert Filmemacher sind anwesend, um ihre Filme dem Publikum persönlich vorzustellen.
Der deutsche Film ist im Aufschwung und gewinnt international an Bedeutung. Dem trägt exground Rechnung in einer frisch aus der Taufe gehobenen Reihe „Neues aus Deutschland“. Auch der offizielle Eröffnungsfilm ist in diesem Jahr eine deutsche Produktion. DESPERADOS ON THE BLOCK wirft einen Blick in eine Studenten-WG, deren Bewohner nicht unterschiedlicher sein könnten. Der gehörlose lettische Student Motek versucht eine Frau zu erobern, die gläubige Rumänin Clara will besonders das sechste Gebot brechen, und der chinesische Sin ist von seiner Nachhilfeschülerin ganz angetan (Beginn um 19.00 Uhr in der Caligari FilmBühne).
Schon am Eröffnungstag sprengt exground die Mauern des Kinos. Nach der erfolgreichen Premiere im vergangenen Jahr beweisen wir erneut: A WALL IS A SCREEN (Treffpunkt um 21.00 Uhr vor der Caligari FilmBühne). Das Guerilla-Kino erobert den Stadtraum auf ganz eigene Weise. Gemeinsam schlendern wir durch Wiesbadens Innenstadt und projizieren Kurzfilme an die nächtlichen Fassaden. Die Stadt, ihre Häuser und Bewohner wie auch zufällige Passanten werden Teil der Performance. Zum Abschluss und zum Vorglühen für die Party im Kulturpalast gibt es Kalt- und Heißgetränke.
Dass Amerika nicht Hollywood ist, scheint eine Binsenweisheit zu sein. Und dennoch sehen wir aus den USA kaum etwas, das nicht in der Traumfabrik produziert wurde. In der traditionsreichsten Sektion von exground filmfest, den American Independents, präsentiert das Festival Filme, die es wert wären, in die deutschen Kinos zu kommen, aber an den üblichen Vertriebsstrukturen scheitern. I SELL THE DEAD ist der passende Film zum Gruseldatum. Am Eröffnungstag erzählt Glenn McQuaid in seinem Spielfilmdebüt die Geschichte eines Grabräubers im 18. Jahrhundert (Beginn um 22.15 Uhr in der Caligari FilmBühne – natürlich am Freitag, dem 13.!).
Multitalent Jörg Buttgereit ist nach langer Abstinenz vom Kino mit der Verfilmung seines Theaterstückes CAPTAIN BERLIN VERSUS HITLER wieder auf der großen Leinwand präsent (Vorführung am 14. November 2009, 22.00 Uhr im Kulturpalast). Mit seinem DJ-Kollegen „One Ticket To Paris“ wird er außerdem bei der ERÖFFNUNGSPARTY im Kulturpalast auflegen (Beginn um 22.00 Uhr).
Die diesjährige Retro ist dem schwedischen Ausnahmeregisseur Roy Andersson gewidmet. Zum Festivalauftakt werden gleich zwei seiner Werke im Alpha Kino zu sehen sein: SONGS FROM THE SECOND FLOOR um 20.00 Uhr und im Anschluss der weniger bekannte, doch sehr Andersson-like, Mit-Siebziger-Jahre Film GILIAP.

Short film competition hosted by the Federal programme "Perspektive 50plus" in partnership with exground filmfest, Wiesbaden.

Within the framework of the programme "Perspektive 50plus" the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs announces a short film competition. The competition is open to films that focus on the subjects of seniority and labour, especially regarding to the phenomenon of long-term unemployed older people and the resultant societal as well as individual problems.
What does it mean to belong to an older member of today’s working society? What significance does labour have in the lives of people that are older than fifty? And how does it feel for people at that age to be unemployed?
The winners can look forward to cash prizes totalling to 10,000 Euro.
The films nominated by the jury will be presented in the course of the awarding ceremony on November 18th at the Caligari FilmBühne in Wiesbaden.
No limitations are set in land of genre (fiction, documentary, animations, experimental film). The submitted films should be up to 30 minutes length and not produced prior to July 2006.

Tomorrow, we will see
Realities, Visions, Utopias
Tomorrow we will see, the day after tomorrow, beyond uncertainty, inevitable processes, the world will look different. Visions, utopias, projections show how life can look after everything has been overcome. Contemplations, projections from the present to the future…
Films up to 10 min. can be submitted in the categories documentary, short fiction and animation. The competition is open for students and young professionals or job starters with work experience of up to 2 years.
The winners can look forward to cash prizes totalling to € 1,500 as well as various non-cash prizes.
The prizes will be awarded during the exground filmfest in Wiesbaden, Germany on Nov 15, 2009 as part of the opening of the 6th exground youth day.

The Theme: Control
We would like to invite filmmakers from around the world to submit short films (animation, music video, artist films, narrative, documentary etc.) up to 10 minutes on the theme ‘Control’.
Have you ever thought of your life as a walk on a tight-rope suspended between control and its loss? Keep walking, don’t waver, don’t lose your grip! Or just let go and savour the moments of weightlessness! Control has many shapes and measures. It can be mental, political, physical, social, scientific, strict, loose or something completely different. You might think about control theory, risk and stress control, mastery and skill, borders, surveillance and mind control, birth and pest control, Control panels, Ctrl Alt Delete, or just the remote control lying on your couch. We look forward to unexpected or surprising takes on the theme, but please don’t lose control of time – we can’t accept anything over 10 minutes! Well, yes we must admit…we are control freaks!

Highlights friday to sunday
For the last three days exground filmfest 21 in Wiesbaden has more highlights in store: the last festival weekend starts on Friday, 21. November 2008, 20.00 at Caligari FilmBühne with the Greek psychothriller TALE 52 by Alexis Alexiou, followed by Johnnie To‘s latest masterpiece SPARROW at 22:15: set in Hong Kong’s pick-pocket scene, the film convinces with a congenial soundtrack and perfect dramaturgy. Same time, different place exground filmfest’s documentary section shows BERLIN by Julian Schnabel, a hommage to Lou Reed and his 1973 album of the same title, a great mix of film, art and music (Friday, 21 November 2008, 22:15 at Alpha Kino). Also Jens Hoffmann will be there to present his film 9TO5 – DAYS IN PORN on Saturday, 22 November 2008, 22:15 at Caligari FilmBühne as well as Gustav Hofer and Luca Ragazzi their documentation SUDDENLY, LAST WINTER, same day 20:00 at Kulturpalast. While 9TO5 – DAYS IN PORN allows intimate insights into the US porn industry‘s epicentre in California, SUDDENLY, LAST WINTER strikingly shows the homophob tendencies in Italian society and the still overwhelming influence of Catholic church and Vatican on politics between Bozen and Messina. Also worth seeing ESTÔMAGO – A GASTRONOMIC STORY by Marcos Jorge, a wonderfully told fairy tale for grown ups around eating, sex and power, which will be presented within exground filmfest’s international section on Saturday, 22 November 2008, 20:00 at Caligari FilmBühne.
Also about to finish are exground filmfest‘s youth days, the last stage with two films ahead. On Friday, 21 November 2008, 17:30 the director Sergio Tovar Velarde and the producer Edgar Barrón will present their film AURORA BOREAL as a German premiere at Caligari FilmBühne. It’s a sort of video diary of 14-year old Mexican boy Mariano telling about his planed suicide. The international youth film contest will be completed by the Swedish tragic comedy THE KING OF PONG from Jens Jonsson about a 16-year old underdog from the North of Europe. After the screening of this film on Saturday, 22 November 2008, 17:30, the youth jury will decide, which of the six feature films will be awarded with the prize money of EUR 2,500.
Last but not least there are to come two premieres within the competitions and as part of the XTRA program: BETTING ON SHORTS on Friday, 21 November 2008, 19:30 in the Kulturpalast – and the very special cineastic walking tour A WALL IS A SCREEN on Saturday 22 November 2008, 20:00, starting in front of the Caligari FilmBühne. BETTING ON SHORTS comprises a program of 17 short films from eleven countries on the topic "Money, Money, Money" and will be shown at the same time in numerous European cities. The clou about it is that the audience can bet before the screening which film will be ahead of the others and win this European contest. The one who wins the bet will get two free tickets for the German short film contest on Sunday 23 November 2008, 19:00 at the Caligari FilmBühne – the traditional closing night program. This year there are ten German shorts that compete for the first three places worth EUR 6,000 that the audience will vote.
